Boone was born in Walterborough,
South Carolina , graduated from theCollege of South Carolina in 1829 and was admitted to the bar in 1833. He then attendedVirginia Theological Seminary and was ordaineddeacon on18 September 1836 andpriest on3 March 1837 . He was appointed a missionary toChina on17 January 1837 , and consecrated in October 1844 inPhiladelphia as the first missionary bishop of China, where he served until his death in Shanghai 1874. He translated theBook of Common Prayer into Chinese and worked on a Chinese translation of theBible .Boone's son,
William Jones Boone, Jr. , also served as a bishop of Shanghai in the Episcopal Church.Consecrators:
