Majlis Bachao Tehreek

Majlis Bachao Tehreek

Majlis Bachao Tehreek (Save Majlis Movement), is an organization in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

History

MBT was founded by Mohammed Amanullah Khan as a result of a split from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimen. Khan formed MBT in 1993 after coming into conflict with the AIMIM president Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi over issues such as nepotism, patronage, and corruption. Amanullah Khan joined the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen in 1960. He contested from the Chandrayangutta Assembly segment for the first time in 1978 and won against the Congress nominee, K. Baliah. Amanullah Khan retained the seat five terms.[1] He represented Chandrayangutta constituency between 1978 and 1994. Four times he was elected as an AIMIM candidate and in 1994 as an MBT candidate. In 1999 he ran as MBT candidate, but was defeated by AIMIM candidate Akbaruddin Owaisi.

Amanullah Khan, who was a trusted lieutenant of the Majlis supremo, Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi, parted ways in 1993 protesting against lack of internal democracy in the party. Subsequently, he formed the Majlis Bachao Tehreek (Save Majlis Movement). Later, he launched a campaign against his bete noire over the Babri Masjid demolition.[1]

Mohammed Amanullah Khan died on November 10, 2002.

In Lok Sabha election 2004 MBT launched another son of Khan, Majidullah Khan, in the Hyderabad constituency (as a counter-candidate against the AIMIM candidate Asaduddin Owaisi). Khan received 47 560 votes (4,78% of the votes in that constituency). Most of the votes came from the Chandrayangutta area, where Khan got 28,746 votes (20,6% of the votes in that area).

In the Andhra Pradesh state legislative assembly elections 2004. MBT had launched seven candidates, out of whom five contested against AIMIM candidates. No MBT candidate was elected.

MBT had two out of a hundred seats in the last sitting Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. Amjad Ullah Khan (son of Amanullah Khan) was one of the corporators. In the newly formed Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Amjad Ullah Khan won as corporator from Azampura division.

Mumtaz Ahmed Khan , member of the legislative assembly on behalf of AIMIM, was a member of MBT until 1999.

Before MBT was formed, MIM had 4 MLA's in Hyderabad. But after the split, the Result was MBT got two MLA's namely AmanUllah Khan from Chandrayangutta, and Mumtaz Khan from Yakhutpura. MIM won only 1 by AsadUddin Owaisi ie Charminar seat. The 4th seat, AsifNagar was lost because of division of votes among MIM Candidate Virasat Rasool Khan and MBT Candidate Vizarath Rasool Khan. It was brother versus brother fight.

Congressman D Nagender won Asif Nagar three times in 1994, 1999, 2004.

Now MBT has become a very small party because of only 1 corporator in GHMC which has a strength of 150. The lone corporator Mr AmjadUllah khan, alias , Khaled, is taking up all the social issues effectively, and is overwhelmingly supported in the Old City area. Political Gurus predict him to win next MLA election for sure.
