French legislative election, 1857

French legislative election, 1857

The 1857 general election organized the second legislature of the French Second Empire. The election was held on June 21 and July 5.

According to the constitution of the empire, partisans of the regime ran as "official candidates" of the regime in often gerrymandered "circonscriptions". As official candidates, their campaign expenditures were paid by the government and their campaigns led by the local government.
