Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced

Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced

Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced (or ACSR) cable is a specific type of high-capacity, high-strength stranded cable used in overhead power lines. The outer strands are aluminum, chosen for its excellent conductivity, low weight, and low cost. The center strand is of steel, providing extra strength. Serendipitously, however, the lower electrical conductivity of the steel core has only a minimal effect on the overall current-carrying capacity of the cable. Due to a skin effect , most of the current is carried by the outer, aluminum portion of the cable, so the higher resistance of the inner, steel strand is largely immaterial.
