French Matignon Accords referendum, 1988

On June 26, 1988, French voters were asked in a referendum to approve the right of New Caledonia residents to vote for self-determination. The referendum was marked by a high rate of abstention. A total of 23,997,118 voters, or 63.11% of the electorate, abstained. Those who voted supported the referendum by a four-to-one margin.
