Grayson Maximillian Sumner III is the main protagonist of the Grey Griffins book series and the leader of the Order of the Grey Griffins consisting of Max, Natalia Romanov, Ernie Tweeny, and Harley Eisenstein. Max is also the guardian of the Codex, a magical object (most often in the form of a ring or a book) that can imprison faerie creatures, as well as (in gauntlet form) focus a deadly energy known as Skyfire. Max is a descendant of a long line of Templar Knights and is being trained by Logan (a knight and personal bodyguard for Max)in martial arts.

While Max grew up in an idyllic world of wealth and power, his life fell apart when his grandfather was killed, and later his parents divorced. Max is a strong leader, but his conviction is undermined by his inability to trust adults (because of his father). He carries with him a strong sense of guilt and more than his fair share of anger. His only true friends are the Griffins, Logan (his bodyguard), and his grandmother. Max wants nothing more than to be the hero he had always hoped his father would be.

Max has brown hair, which lightens up with the summer sun, and storm gray eyes.
