The Vels were a prominent fixture on the Philadelphia music scene of the early 1980's [http://www.gophila.com/Go/PressRoom/pressreleases/african_american/Backgrounder_Phillys_Melting_Pot_Of_Music.aspx] . Their notoriety grew to the point that they caught the attention of Mercury Records and were signed.
In 1985 and 1986, The Vels toured the world as the opening act for
The Psychedelic Furs .The Vels released two albums under the Mercury label, but disbanded in 1987.
