Union, Oregon ,United States . [Jewell, Judy. "Oregon". Fodors, LLC. 2005. ISBN 1-400-1587-1.] It was a popular vacation and resting spot due to its relaxing thermal waters. Purchased by Dr. W. T. Phy in 1917 who developed state-of-the-art medical facilities including a hospital and surgery room with the most modern X-ray and radiation treatments of the time. Known then as the Hot Lake Sanitarium attracting hundreds of guests and patients daily until its decline after Dr. Phy's death in 1931. The earlier wooden building was destroyed by a fire in 1934. Use of the complex continued to decline until about 1991 when it became abandoned, and fell prey to vandals and the elements, changing ownership several times. It has been rumored to be haunted by old vacationers, a gardener who committed suicide, insane people from the building's sanitorium days. When the hotel was originally constructed it acquired a piano formerly owned byRobert E. Lee 's wife. The music is rumored to be heard to this very day.
