And Carl Laughed

And Carl Laughed

"And Carl Laughed" is a play based on the life of Father Carl Kabat,
a Catholic priest who has served over 17 years in prison for his nonviolent protest against nuclear weapons.

The play was written by Kelley Ryan, theatre director at Clayton High School in Clayton, MO, and Nick Otten, a semi-retired English teacher. It was performed by students from the high school.

The first draft premiered in January 2007. A later, finalized version was performed internationally at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as a part
of the American High School Theatre Festival.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch described the play as "...a surreal meditation
on loyalty to one's conscience and quixotic ambitions with a heavy dose of liberation theology, a sprinkling of Cirque du Soleil, and a dollop of Samuel Beckett." After selling out and extending its original run, the show toured through the spring and summer to several churches and a street theater in the St. Louis area before its international debut in Edinburgh.

Furthermore, after it's debut in Scotland, a drama group in South Africa - St Benedict's College - produced the play at a national student festival in that country, where they reached the semi-finals and received 4 awards.
