Steven Beckwith Ayres (
October 27 ,1861 -June 1 ,1929 ) was a U.S. Representative fromNew York .Born in
Fort Dodge, Iowa , Ayres moved with his parents toElmira, New York , in 1866.He attended the grammar school.He moved toPenn Yan, New York , in 1873.He attended thePenn Yan Academy and was graduated from Syracuse (New York) University, in 1882.He engaged in the publishing business at Penn Yan and was editor of the Yates County Chronicle.He served as delegate to the Republican State convention in 1884.He moved to New York City in 1893 and engaged in the advertising business.He declined the Democratic nomination as candidate for the New York State assembly in 1910.Ayres was elected as an Independent Democrat to the Sixty-second Congress (
March 4 ,1911 -March 3 ,1913 ).He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection as an Independent Democrat in 1912 to the Sixty-third Congress.He was author of several books and many historical articles. Lecturer in theNew York University Summer School in 1914.He engaged in the cultivation of oranges atClearwater, Florida , in winter and in the real estate business atWoodstock, New York , during the summer.He died in New York City,June 1 ,1929 .He was interred in the Clearwater Cemetery,Clearwater, Florida .References
