John Morgan Bright

John Morgan Bright (January 20, 1817 - October 3, 1911) was a U.S. Representative from Tennessee.

Born in Fayetteville, Tennessee, Bright attended the schools of Fayetteville and Bingham's School, Hillsboro, North Carolina.He was graduated from Nashville (Tennessee) University in September 1839 and from the law department of Transylvania University, Lexington, Kentucky, in March 1841.He was admitted to the bar in 1841 and commenced practice in Fayetteville, Tennessee.He served as member of the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1847 and 1848.He served as general on the staff of Gov. Isham G. Harris 1861-1865.

Bright was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second and to the four succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1871-March 3, 1881).He served as chairman of the Committee on Claims (Forty-fourth through Forty-sixth Congresses), Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Treasury (Forty-fourth Congress).He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1880 to the Forty-seventh Congress.He resumed the practice of law.He died in Fayetteville, Tennessee, October 3, 1911.He was interred in the Presbyterian Churchyard.
