John Hammond (New York)

John Hammond (August 17, 1827 - May 28, 1889) was a U.S. Representative from New York.

Born at Crown Point, New York, Hammond attended the public schools and St. Albans Academy, St. Albans, Vermont.He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York and pioneered to California in 1849. About a decade later he volunteered as a private in the Civil War. He was promoted to captain of Cavalry and advanced to brigadier general. He was a manufacturer of iron for twenty-five years and served as president of the Crown Point Iron Co.

Hammond was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses (March 4, 1879-March 3, 1883).He was not a candidate for renomination and later retired from his business.He died at Crown Point, New York, May 28, 1889.He was interred in Forest Dale Cemetery.
