James S. Smart

James Stevenson Smart (June 14, 1842 - September 17, 1903) was a U.S. Representative from New York.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Smart moved with his parents to Coila, Washington County, New York, in 1849.He attended Cambridge (New York) Academy and Union College, Schenectady, New York, and was graduated from Jefferson College, Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1863.He entered the Union Army in January 1864 as first lieutenant in the Sixteenth Regiment of New York Heavy Artillery.He was promoted to a captaincy, and was honorably discharged in August 1865.He engaged in newspaper work at Cambridge, New York, in 1865 and published the Washington County Post.

Smart was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress (March 4, 1873-March 3, 1875).He was not a candidate for renomination in 1874.He was appointed collector of internal revenue for the northern district of New York and served from March 31, 1883, until November 9, 1885.He served as member of the Republican State central committee for many years.He died in Cambridge, Washington County, New York, September 17, 1903.He was interred in Woodland Cemetery.
