Elisha Litchfield (
July 12 ,1785 Canterbury,Windham County, Connecticut -August 4 ,1859 Cazenovia,Madison County, New York ) was an American politician who served as aUnited States Representative fromNew York .Life
He attended the common schools, and learned the carpenter's trade. He moved to
Onondaga County, New York , and settled in Delphi (now Delphi Falls) in 1812. He fought in theWar of 1812 and was promoted to Major. He served asJustice of the Peace and supervisor of Onondaga County. He was appointed postmaster of DelphiNovember 28 ,1817 , and served untilJune 25 ,1821 .He served as member of the
New York State Assembly in 1819, from 1831 to 1833, in 1844, and in 1848, and was its speaker in 1844.Litchfield was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the
Seventeenth United States Congress and as one of the Crawford Democratic-Republicans to theEighteenth United States Congress (March 4 ,1821 -March 3 ,1825 ). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1824 to the Nineteenth Congress.He moved to Cazenovia in 1838 and died there on
August 4 ,1859 . He was interred in the City Cemetery, Delphi Falls.ource
