Adoniram Judson Holmes (
March 2 ,1842 -January 21 ,1902 ) was a U.S. Representative fromIowa .Born in
Wooster, Ohio , Holmes moved with his parents toPalmyra, Wisconsin , in 1853. He attended the common schools, and enteredMilton College ofMilton, Wisconsin , but left in 1862 because of the Civil War to enter theUnion Army . He served in the Twenty-fourth Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, until the close of the war.He completed his studies in Milton College and graduated from the law department of the
University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1867. He was admitted to the bar and commenced practice inBoone, Iowa , in 1868, where he served as mayor in 1880 and 1881. He also served as member of theIowa House of Representatives in 1882 and 1883.Holmes was elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth, Forty-ninth, and Fiftieth Congresses (
March 4 ,1883 -March 3 ,1889 ). He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1888. He served asSergeant at Arms of the House of Representatives in the Fifty-first Congress. He resumed the practice of law in Boone, where he served as county attorney from 1896 to 1899. He died inClarinda, Iowa , and is interred in Linwood Cemetery of Boone.References
