William Evans Arthur

William Evans Arthur (March 3, 1825 - May 18, 1897) was a U.S. Representative from Kentucky.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Arthur moved with his parents to Covington, Kentucky, where he received instruction from private tutors and also in private schools.He studied law.He was admitted to the bar in 1850 and commenced practice in Covington. Commonwealth attorney for the ninth judicial district of Kentucky 1856-1862.He served as presidential elector on the Democratic ticket of Breckinridge and Lane in 1860.He was appointed judge of the ninth judicial circuit in 1866 and served until 1868, when he resigned.

Arthur was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses (March 4, 1871-March 3, 1875).He was not a candidate for renomination in 1874.He resumed the practice of law in Covington.He became judge of the twelfth judicial circuit of Kentucky in 1886 and served until 1893, when he resigned.He engaged in the practice of law until his death in Covington, Kentucky, May 18, 1897.He was interred in Linden Grove Cemetery.
