Katia Dandoulaki _el. Κάτια Δανδουλάκη (born May 16, 1948) is an Academy Award nominated Greek theatre, television and international film actress, former fashion model and recording artist. She is best known for her role as protagonist Virna Drako on the Greek television series Lampsi in the 1990s and is widely accepted by critics as one of the greatest theatre and stage actresses of modern times.

Biography

Katia Dandoulaki starred in many popular Greek films, like _Papaflessas (1971)_ with Dimitris Papamixail. But her big popularity came when she portraited Marmo Panteou, an adulterous young wife, in the classic tv series "Pantheoi, Oi" (1977), based on a classic novel by Tassos Athanassiadis.

She is the spouse of the Greek intellectual, translator, writer Marios Ploritis, who has translated many of her plays. During the 90s she starred as Virna Drakou in a popular Greek soap opera of Nikos Foskolos Lampsi. She was a personal friend of Elli Lambeti and of the present Prime Minister, K. Simitis. During the 2001-2002 season she played Emma in the classic Pinter play 'Betrayal'. It was a big success, and directed by Stamatis Fasoulis. Her co-stars were S. Zalmas and K. Konstantopoulos.

She also played Maria Kallas in Terence MacNally's Master Class, and Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire. She was one of the basic stars in the TV series, "Istera irthan oi melisses" (2000), directed by Koutsomitis. It was one of the few successes that ET1, the state TV channel, had in the last few years.

Lately, she worked on Vera Sto Dexi, as a main character, until the cancellation of the series in 2007.

Katia Dandoulaki Theatre

Katia Dandoulaki has a theatre named after her in Athens. The late modern theatre of Katia Dandoulaki resulted from the creative remodelling of the third floor of a commercial complex of entertainment halls built in the 1960s. In particular, the 1000 m2 area of the Superstar Theatre was completely remodelled. It is a work by the gifted architect Katerina Thanou, graduate of the Ecole Speciale d’Architecture in Paris.

Through its evocative atmosphere and simplicity, it expresses the demands of the distinguished actress Katia Dandoulaki for quality in theatrical productions. The theatre was designed with knowledge, economy of resources and good taste so as to suggest the presence of the architect rather than imposing it.

The theatre proper has 500 stalls on an inclined level and a stage 200 m2 with a revolving section which offered the possibility of multiple uses. The foyer, with an area of 250 m2, is on two levels and includes a bar, bookshop, lounge and a small exhibition area in the loft.

The desired aesthetic simplicity has been achieved through the plasticity of the architectural forms and the use of simple and rough materials like metal, wood and decorative bricks.The range of blue and black colours, in conjunction with the appropriate lighting, lends the area an evocative atmosphere, while the foyer is enlivened by ochre tones.
