The Cathedral of Bergamo or Duomo di Bergamo is a
cathedral inBergamo ,Italy , dedicated since1638 to Sant'Alessandro, patron saint of the city. The cathedral, which hosts the seat of thebishop of Bergamo, is found in the old (upper) city.History
The construction of a church on the site began in the Lombard era. By the 1400s, bishop
Giovanni Barozzi commissioned a new building. In his writings,Filarete attributed to himself the plans. In1689 , the structure was updated using designs byCarlo Fontana . The facade was completed in1889 .Interior
In the first chapel on the right is a "St. Benedict and Saints" by
Andrea Previtali (1524 ), and on the first chapel to the left of thenave is the "Madonna and child with Saints" byGiovan Battista Moroni (1576 ). The church conserves a "Madonna with child with two doves" byGiovanni Cariani , as well as canvases attributed toGiambettino Cignaroli andSebastiano Ricci , a "Saints Firmus, Rusticus, and Proculus" (1704). The apse has a "Martyrdom of St. John of Bergamo, Bishop" (1731 -1743 ) byGiovanni Battista Tiepolo . The "St. Alessandro" was painted byCarlo Innocenzo Carloni . The mainaltar was designed byFilippo Juvara . The choir area has wooden intaglio panels byJohann Karl Sanz .ources
