Kilaulay

Kilaulay (Scottish Gaelic: Cill Amhlaidhhttp://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/towns/townfirst9033.html Retrieved on June 2, 2007] / Cill Amhlaighhttp://www.scottish.parliament.uk/vli/language/gaelic/pdfs/placenamesK-O.pdf Retrieved on June 2, 2007] ) is a crofting township on the island of South Uist, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Kilaulay is located on the NW corner of the island, situated about 2.5 km west of Eochar.

Cill Amhlaidh, (Anglicized as Aulay's Church), may be named after a Norse called Olaf as there is no record of a Gaelic saint of the name Amhlaidh. Amhlaidh / Amhlaigh is a Gaelicization of the Norse name Olaf.

There was a tradition that Saint Bliannan brought holy soil from Rome to South Uist and scattered the sacred earth on the site of the ancient church of Kilaulay.
