John Harris Smithwick (
July 17 ,1872 -December 2 ,1948 ) was a U.S. Representative fromFlorida .Born near
Orange, Georgia , Smithwick attended the public schools.He was graduated from Reinhardt Normal College,Waleska, Georgia , in 1895 and fromCumberland School of Law atCumberland University ,Lebanon, Tennessee , in 1897.He was admitted to the bar in 1898 and commenced the practice of his profession inMoultrie, Georgia .He moved toPensacola, Florida , in 1906 and continued the practice of his profession.Smithwick was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-sixth and to the three succeeding Congresses (
March 4 ,1919 -March 3 ,1927 ).He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1926.He engaged in the real estate business inFort Myers, Florida , and inWashington, D.C. .He retired in 1932 and resided inMoultrie, Georgia , until his death onDecember 2 ,1948 .He was interred in Westview Cemetery.References
