Bob Shad (
February 12 ,1920 –March 13 ,1985 ) was a music producer andrecord label owner. He produced the first album byBig Brother and the Holding Company (featuringJanis Joplin ).Shad's career as a producer began with
Savoy Records andNational Records in the 1940s, producingCharlie Parker in addition toblues andR&B material. He founded the first of several labels,Sittin' In With , in 1948, where he producedLightnin' Hopkins ,Sonny Terry andBrownie McGhee ,Smokey Hogg ,Peppermint Harris ,Curley Weaver , and others. In 1951, he was named director ofA&R atMercury Records , where he founded theEmArcy label. There he produced, among others, jazz musiciansSarah Vaughan ,Maynard Ferguson , theClifford Brown /Max Roach quintet andDinah Washington . He also worked in pop (withPatti Page ,Vic Damone , andThe Platters ) and blues (with Hopkins again andBig Bill Broonzy ). In 1964 he foundedMainstream Records , where he both reissued his old material and produced new recordings from the likes ofShelly Manne ,Dizzy Gillespie ,Roy Haynes ,Buddy Terry , andPete Yellin . His credits in rock and roll include the debut albums of bothJanis Joplin andTed Nugent .Shad's grandson is the writer-director
