Roy Mlakar (born
September 10 ,1950 in Parma,Ohio ) is the current president and ,CEO of theOttawa Senators professionalice hockey club of theNational Hockey League (NHL) and theScotiabank Place arena. He is also the alternate governor of the Senators.Career
Education
Roy Mlakar earned his degree in communications and journalism from
Akron University in 1972. While in University he worked for all three ofCleveland ’s professional sports franchises - the Cleveland Barons of the AHL, theCleveland Cavaliers of theNBA and theCleveland Indians of MLB.Providence Reds
He was hired by the
Providence Reds of the AHL in 1973. He served as director of public relations and was later promoted to the position of assistant general manager working with then Providence GMJohn Muckler .New Haven Nighthawks
In 1978 he joined the
New Haven Nighthawks the AHL affiliate of theLos Angeles Kings . He spent 11 seasons with the team winning theHendy Award as the AHL's Executive of the Year in 1985.Los Angeles Kings
In 1988 He joined the
Los Angeles Kings . he spent 7 seasons with the team five as an executive vice-president and two as club president. He was instrumental in bringingWayne Gretzky to the Kings from theEdmonton Oilers . The Kings made it to theStanley Cup final in 1993 under his leadership. During his tenure with Los Angeles, the Kings set a California professional sports record with 282 consecutive sellouts.Ottawa Senators
Roy Mlakar was appointed president and chief executive officer of the
Ottawa Senators onJune 3 ,1996 . He took on responsibilities forScotiabank Place in May 1998. In 2007, the Senators made it to theStanley Cup final where they played theAnaheim Ducks , eventually losing in 5 games. As of summer 2007, Mlakar has 1 year remaining on his contract as President & CEO of the Ottawa Senators.Personal life
