Charles Albert Plumley

Charles Albert Plumley (April 14, 1875 - October 31, 1964) was a Republican U.S. Representative from Vermont, son of the U.S. Representative Frank Plumley.

Born in Northfield, Washington County, Vermont, Plumley attended the public schools. He was graduated from Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1896. He received additional degrees from Norwich (A.M, 1899; LL.D, 1921; Litt.D, 1947), Middlebury College (LL.D, 1922), Boston University (LL.D, 1940), and the University of Vermont (LL.D, 1941). Plumley Armory on the campus of Norwich University was named for him in 1962.

He served as assistant secretary of the State senate in 1894. He was principal and superintendent of the Northfield grade schools and high schools 1896-1900. He served as assistant clerk and clerk of the State house of representatives 1900-1910. He served as captain in the Vermont National Guard in 1901. He served as colonel in the Officers' Reserve Corps. He studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1903 and commenced practice in Northfield, Vermont. He was Secretary of the French-Venezuela Mixed Commission in 1906. He served as member of the State house of representatives 1912-1915, serving as speaker. He served as commissioner of taxes for the State of Vermont 1912-1919. He served as general counsel and tax attorney for a rubber company in Akron, Ohio, in 1919 and 1920. He served as president of Norwich University 1920-1934. Reading clerk of the Republican National Conventions of 1936 and 1940. He also engaged in banking.

Plumley was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Ernest W. Gibson. He was reelected to the Seventy-fourth and to the seven succeeding Congresses and served from January 16, 1934, to January 3, 1951 as U.S. Representative from Vermont (at-large). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1950. He resumed the practice of law in Northfield, Vermont. He died in Barre, Vermont, October 31, 1964. He was interred in Mount Hope Cemetery, Northfield, Vermont.
