The village came into existence in 16-17th centuries. Lesnovo lies in the eastern Sofia Valley, between the Balkan Mountains to the north and Sredna Gora to the southeast. The Lesnovo River, a tributary of the Iskar, flows nearby. The village's name is derived from the word "les" (лес, "forest") with the Slavic suffix "-ovo", as reflected in the older Ottoman name "Ormanlı" and its Bulgarianized version "Ormanliya".

Lesnovo has a community centre ("chitalishte") called "Immortality" and a school founded in 1879.
