Vivapets or Vivapets.com is a online pet community for pet owners and enthusiasts. It offers a combination of custom websites for pets, social networking and a large wiki knowledge base with hundreds of breeds and articles in an open community environment. People can stay in touch on the move with the Vivapets mobile optimized version, working on all browser enabled cellphones and with services and content tailored to the mobile user needs.

Launch and expansion

Born Arca de Noé, now Arca de Noé Vivapets, was launched on January 1, 2000, by Memória Visual [http://www.memoriavisual.pt] , a small company based in Oporto, Portugal founded by Marcos Cerqueira. It was the pioneering project focusing on pet communities initially being available for the Portuguese speaking countries, mainly Portugal and Brazil. On 2003 Marco Sousa, already working closely with Cerqueira in technology and development, joined the company as CTO and the first major upgrade was launched featuring a totally new interface and many new features.

After a year of development the biggest change to the project came about with the launch in February 2007 of a beta Vivapets project, taking the concept to the English and Spanish speaking audience and incorporating many innovative features associated with Web 2.0 projects.

Main Features

With main sections for Dogs, Cats, Birds, Fish, Reptiles and Exotics, all kinds of breeds and animals are catered for. A dedicated team of experts combine with the Wiki based input from community members to create an always expanding pet knowledge base.

Communicate:Make new pet and user buddies, discuss hot topics in forums and chat, exchange info and opinions, show off pet’s photos, send messages to buddies. There’s a special virtual currency called Vivas! that allows people to get lots of cool stuff from a virtual gift shop.

Create:Custom petsites, petblogs, publish photo albums, generate tags, wiki breeds and articles. Features like favorite stuff let users stay tuned to what’s new and keep up with all the user generated content.

Learn:All users can browse or search a large knowledge base on everything pet-related, ranging from breed profiles, articles and tutorials, to advice from specialists and user-generated content.
