King hit

King hit

King hit is a phrase used mostly throughout Australia and New Zealand which refers to a particularly vicious attack. It's precise definition is not known as it is a neologism used almost exclusively by news media. Usually, however, it is a punch to the face intended to cause as much damage as possible, with the victim often having been taken by surprise. Popular cases of bashings often use the term and victims often end up in hospital.

The phrase is frequently used in connection with Australian rules footballers: "He is most remembered for his mad outbursts and king hits on the football field".

Australian newspaper headlines include: "Silent thug who king-hit cyclist" and "Referee to blame for king hit".

It is also used as a term where the victim is knocked unconscious with only one punch, e.g. "He was king hit from behind and fell to the floor."
