playoffs = "Did not quailify"The 1984 Tampa Bay Buccaneers season began with the team trying to improve on an 2-14 season. It turned out to be John McKay's final season as the team's head coach. James Wilder had 2,219 total yards on the season which was 11 yards short of the NFL record. For this reason McKay ordered his defense to allow the New York Jets to score last in the final game of the season in order to give Wilder the chance to break the record. Steve DeBerg became the starting quarterback during the third game of the year, and in doing so produced what is still one of the 3 top Offensive seasons in franchise history. The offense was ranked higher in the league than the defense for the first time in the team's history. Lee Roy Selmon made the Pro Bowl in his final season. By this point, Tampa Bay was no longer a defensive team although a number of its heroes were still playing their final years with the team.
