Altamont Road

Altamount Road or Altamont Road "(more correctly)" is an upmarket residential street in South Mumbai, parallel to Peddar Road which it meets at the well-known intersection called Kemp's Corner. On Altamount Road are the consulates of Indonesia and of South Africa; on the connecting Carmichael Road are the Belgian, Chinese, and Japanese consulates. The road has been in the news in recent times because of the construction at its crest of a 27-storied mansion by the Indian industrialist, Mukesh Ambani which, when completed, will have a floor area larger than the Palace of Versailles. Recently it has been rated as 10th most costliest street in the world. The road was officially re-named "S. K. Barodawalla Marg" many years ago, but residents, the city's taxi-drivers, and others continue to refer to it by its former name. It is a place of great beauty filled with trees and heritage building from the official residence of the Chairman of the Bombay Port Trust and also the residence of the Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai . The residential bunglow of the Bombay Port Trust was originally made by Vittel who also designed the Gateway of India , Ballard Estate .
