- Small nucleolar RNA SNORD73
snoRNA U73 (also known as SNORD73) is a
non-coding RNA (ncRNA) molecule which functions in the biogenesis (modification) of othersmall nuclear RNA s (snRNAs). This type of modifiying RNA is located in thenucleolus of the eukaryotic cell which is a major site of snRNA biogenesis. It is known as a small nucleolar RNA (snoRNA) and also often referred to as a guide RNA.snoRNA U73 is a member of the C/D box class of snoRNAs which contain the conserved sequence motifs known as the C box (UGAUGA) and the D box (CUGA). Most of the members of the box C/D family function in directing site-specific 2'-O-
methylation of substrate RNAs [cite journal | last = Galardi | first = S | coauthors = Fatica A, Bachi A, Scaloni A, Presutti C, Bozzoni I | year = 2002 | title = Purified box C/D snoRNPs are able to reproduce site-specific 2'-O-ribose methylation of target RNA in vitro | journal = Mol Cell Biol | volume = 22 | pages = 6663–6668 | pmid = 12215523 | doi = 10.1128/MCB.22.19.6663-6668.2002] .U73 is encoded within the
intron s of ribosomal protein S3a and contains a 12 nucleotide region of complementarity to a conserved sequence in 28Sribosomal RNA (rRNA) [cite journal | last = Rebane | first = A | coauthors = Tamme R, Laan M, Pata I, Metspalu A | year = 1998 | title = A novel snoRNA (U73) is encoded within the introns of the human and mouse ribosomal protein S3a genes | journal = Gene | volume = 210 | pages = 255–263 | pmid = 9573378 | doi = 10.1016/S0378-1119(98)00070-5 ] . U73 has been demonstrated to function as a 2'-O-ribose methylation guide RNA for pre-28S rRNA [cite journal | last = Rebane | first = A | coauthors = Roomere H, Metspalu A. | year = 2002 | title = Locations of several novel 2'-O-methylated nucleotides in human 28S rRNA | journal = BMC Mol Biol. | volume = 3 | pmid = 11897011 | doi = 10.1186/1471-2199-3-1 | pages = 1 ] .References
