Geography

Achanta is a popular and historic village located in Godavari river basin (Andhra Pradesh, India) [http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=achanta,India&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=32.885543,82.265625&ie=UTF8&ll=16.632902,81.943588&spn=0.310536,0.6427&t=h&z=11&om=0 Map] .

History

Several stone inscriptions found on temples in Achanta suggest that it may have served as an important religious center for Eastern Chalukyan Empire (700AD - 1130AD).

Economy

Achanta consists mostly of agriculturists and small scale traders. Like most villages in Godavari River Delta, farmers manage to cultivate two crops of paddy and one summer crop (usually lintels). Many farm lands are surrounded by Coconut trees and Mango Trees. In recent years, rising cost of labor and constant selling price for yield is forcing many farmers to send their children to cities thus ending an age old tradition.

Culture

Mahasivarathri (Night of Siva) is celebrated with grandeur.
