SM U-61

SM "U-61" was a German Type Mittel U U-boat commissioned and deployed to operate off the coast of the British Isles and attack coastal shipping as part of the First Battle of the Atlantic.

In a fifteen month career spanning nine war patrols, the "U-61" plagued allied shipping in the Atlantic Ocean during the First Battle of the Atlantic. She was one of the most successful submarines of the German Navy, sinking 33 allied ships, totalling 84,564 tons. She also damaged 7 ships of 23,783 tons and the US destroyer USS "Cassin". This ladt target only survived with the aid of Royal Navy captain Ronald Niel Stuart in HMS "Tamarisk". She was sunk on the 26 March 1918 by US submarine chaser PC-51 in the Atlantic with all 36 hands.
