SM "U-61" was a German Type Mittel U
U-boat commissioned and deployed to operate off the coast of theBritish Isles and attack coastal shipping as part of theFirst Battle of the Atlantic .In a fifteen month career spanning nine war patrols, the "U-61" plagued allied shipping in the
Atlantic Ocean during theFirst Battle of the Atlantic . She was one of the most successful submarines of the German Navy, sinking 33 allied ships, totalling 84,564 tons. She also damaged 7 ships of 23,783 tons and the USdestroyer USS "Cassin". This ladt target only survived with the aid ofRoyal Navy captainRonald Niel Stuart in HMS "Tamarisk". She was sunk on the26 March 1918 by US submarine chaser PC-51 in the Atlantic with all 36 hands.External links
