Per Lønning

Per Lønning

Per Lønning (born February 24 1928) is a Norwegian bishop, theologian, professor and politician. Lønning received his Doctor of theology from University of Oslo in 1955. From 1958 to 1965 he was a member of the Norwegian Parliament for the Conservative Party of Norway.

From 1969 he was bishop of the Diocese of Borg before he resigned in 1978 in protest against the passing of a law that allowed abortion on demand in Norway. From 1981 to 1987 he was professor at the University of Strasbourg and in 1987 to 1994 he was bishop of the Diocese of Bjørgvin in Bergen.

Per Lønning is the brother of theologian, professor, university rector and politician Inge Lønning.
