SM "U-83" was a German Type Mittel U
U-boat commissioned and deployed to operate off the coast of theBritish Isles and attack coastal shipping as part of theFirst Battle of the Atlantic .In a six month career, the "U-83" performed two combat patrols into the
Atlantic Ocean during theFirst Battle of the Atlantic . In these patrols she sank five allied merchant ships for 6,286 tons. On17 February 1917 , she torpedoed the BritishQ-ship HMS "Farnborough" off the Irish coast, but was ambushed by "Farnborough"'s hidden armaments when she approached too close and was sunk with 35 hands. "Farnborough" was commanded by the submarine hunter Gordon Campbell and had on board laterVictoria Cross recipientsRonald Niel Stuart and William Williams.External links
