Background

Adan Ahmed Elmi was born in the Somaliland city of Hargeisa. He lived in Mogadishu, Burco and Berbera during his childhood. Adan Ahmed Elmi comes from the Garhajis clan of the Isaaq tribe.

Before his appointment to the Somaliland Parliament, he was widely known for his comedic Somali films that portrayed the attitudes of Somali people which were released in the late 1990s.

He joined the UDUB party of Somaliland in late 2001 citing reasons to better the economy and living conditions in the country.

Adan Ahmed Elmi is the son of Ahmed Elmi, a well respected military commander during the Siad Barre years, now deceased. His mother, Khadija Mohamoud, owns a fruits and vegetable company in eastern Hargeisa. Belonging to the extended Dholayare family, he has twelve siblings, almost all of which reside outside of Africa.
