Lisa Marangon

Lisa Marangon

Lisa Marangon (born 12 June 1980) is a Sydney, Australia based professional triathlete. Marangon won her first major professional race, the Busselton, Western Australia half ironman on 5 May 2007 in a record time of 4:15:13. The race consisted of a 1.9 kilometre swim, a 90.1 kilometre bike and a 21.1 kilometre run. A single mum, Marangon is known for her grit. Her front tire blew out and she fell heavily on her ribs just weeks ahead of the Busselton event. In late October 2006, she was among a group of four cyclists hit by an out-of-control car on a Sydney motorway just weeks before competing at Ironman WA in Busselton – where on a borrowed bike, and still injured, she was in second place coming off the bike and went on to record her current personal best Ironman-distance time of 9:35.

An Ironman distance consists of a 3.8 kilometre swim, a 180.2 kilometre bike and a 42.2 kilometre run. The Ironman and 70.3 race series' are organized, promoted and licensed by the World Triathlon Corporation. In 2003 Marangon won the 18-24 year old age group at Ironman Australia in Forster and qualified for the Hawaii World Championships. In training for those world championships, she won the New South Wales Duathlon Championships in the 20-24 age group. She finished second in her age group in Kona. In 2004 she won the 18-24 age group at the Australian Ironman for a second year. At the World Championships she finished third. She turned professional during 2004. She has completed nine of the 10 Ironman races she has started. In the four she completed as an age-grouper she never finished outside the top three. In the five she has completed so far as a professional, she’s always finished in the top 10. Her best Ironman placing so far was third at Korea in 2005. In each of her professional Ironman races, she’s always exited the water among the top three women and has always completed the bike segment among the top five. While a keen athlete as a teenager - she played basketball, touch football, netball and soccer, Marangon's main sporting achievements came in the pool. She won a 1995 Pierre de Coubertin Award from the Australian Olympic Committee in recognition of her athletic prowess and qualities of fair play.
