Jean-Jacques Kieffer (1857,
Guinkirchen , near Boulay- December, 1925 ,Bitche , was a French entomologist who specialised inHymenoptera andDiptera .After his studies at the seminar ofMetz , Kieffer became apriest in 1880. Appointed professor ofnatural science to the college of Bitche (Holy Institute Augustin), he remained in this post for 45 years.Jean-Jacques Kieffer became an entomologist of international fame. He specialized in the study of parasitic insects.They were in particularCynipidae , andCecidomyiidae . He also worked onChironomidae . In 1887, he described "Aulax hypochoeidis Kieffer" the first among hundreds of insects, previously unknown and which bore, from now on, his name. His work earned him, in 1904, the title of "Doctor honoris causa" of theUniversity of Strasbourg . In 1919, he was elected president of theLorraine Society of Natural History . At the request of thePasteur Institute , in 1922 and 1923, Jean-Jacques Kieffer went toAlgeria to study there the mosquito vectors of diseases. Research of this famous scientist contributed to the development of the biological control of parasitic insects by using their own parasites.ource
