Nathura Bay

Nathura Bay

Nathura Bay is located two hours to the east of Cape Town, and is the home of one of the oldest plantations in South Africa.

The bay still has a small settlement surrounding the old plantation house, named Oxford house, but the community largely centres on it still as it provides local jobs in paper manufacturing and corporate management for the family.

Oxford House, was built in 1754, and has been in the hands of the Harrington family (now Harrington-Butler) since that date when a sugar plantation was begun, as well as a gold refining centre. The family are descended from Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer. The current owner of the property is Andrew "Edward" Harrington-Butler, who is also the head of the Harrington-Butler corporation, which is reportedly worth $765 million in stocks and shares. He has six children, the eldest being Andrew "Devin" Harrington-Butler, who attended the prestigious St. Ethelburga's school in Yorkshire. The family are still at the economic centre of the community and are one of the richest families in the Western Cape of South Africa.
