The Hotel Severin originally opened in 1913 as the Grand Hotel of Indianapolis. The building now stands as one of the last remaining structures in the Indianapolis Union Station Wholesale District and it is contributing property to the historic district. The hotel is located directly across Jackson Place from the Union Station (Indianapolis) headhouse.
From opening in 1913 to the late 1930s, the Hotel Severin thrived on the 300 passenger trains that came in and out of Indianapolis daily. It was built by Henry Severin Jr. with help from the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway Founders Carl G. Fisher and James A. Allison.
The immense Austrian crystal chandelier hanging in the Severin Ballroom Lobby is the original chandelier from 1913. The marble staircase is also from the original hotel. Several different owners managed the hotel until it was bought by Warren M. Atkinson in 1966. Renamed the Atkinson Hotel, the building underwent a $2.5 million renovation. Mansur Development Corporation bought the Atkinson Hotel in July 1988 and after a $40 million high profile restoration, the hotel reopened as the Omni Severin Hotel. with the renovation of the original hotel and the additional rooms, the hotel now boasts sixty different guest room configurations which add to the character and uniqueness of the property. The original 1913 mailbox still serves as the working mailbox in the hotel today. Other visible items from the original Hotel Severin are the furniture pieces located on each elevator landing of the hotel. These pieces were dressers from the guest rooms of the Hotel Severin. Today, the Omni Severin Hotel is the city's only remaining "grand hotel" and continues to be a proud, historic landmark amidst the downtown renaissance. The Omni Severin Hotel is the oldest and longest operating hotel in downtown Indianapolis.
The Omni Severin Hotel has 424 guest rooms with meeting and banquet facilities. The hotel is a member of the Omni Hotels chain.
