Ink Flag

The Ink Flag ( _he. דגל הדיו), refers to an episode during the Israeli War of Independence, which symbolizes the victory of the Israel Defense Force in Eilat.

On March 5 1949, Operation Ovda was launched. On March 10, the Israeli forces reached Umm Rashrash west of Aqaba (the biblical Elath) and captured it without a battle. The Negev Brigade and Golani Brigade took part in the operation. They raised a hand-made flag painted with ink and claimed Eilat for Israel.

The flag is essentially like the present flag of Israel, but is distinctive in that the Star of David is solid, rather than partitioned and hollow.
