The Ink Flag ( _he. דגל הדיו), refers to an episode during the
Israeli War of Independence , which symbolizes the victory of theIsrael Defense Force inEilat .On
March 5 1949 ,Operation Ovda was launched. OnMarch 10 , the Israeli forces reached Umm Rashrash west ofAqaba (the biblical Elath) and captured it without a battle. TheNegev Brigade andGolani Brigade took part in the operation. They raised a hand-made flag painted with ink and claimed Eilat for Israel.The flag is essentially like the present
flag of Israel , but is distinctive in that theStar of David is solid, rather than partitioned and hollow.The flag of modern Israel
