World Wide VPN

World Wide VPN

The World Wide VPN is a project whose aim is to create the largest end-node VPN in the world. The World Wide VPN is hosted by the [http://www.worldwidevpn.com World Wide VPN website] .

Overview

The World Wide VPN (wwvpn) is composed of two types of system participants, backbone servers and dial-in systems.

Backbone servers are systems that have full-time broadband-speed (or greater) Internet connections and are connected to each other via permanent VPN technology protocols. At the time of this writing the two VPN protocols used to connect backbone servers are IPSec and OpenVPN.

Dial-in systems are not necessarily connected to the Internet via dial-up services, but are rather classified as dial-in to the wwvpn. In other words dial-in systems are not always connected to the wwvpn. Dial-in technologies include those used on the backbone servers as well as other less secure VPN technologies like Microsoft's PPTP.

Purposes

The wwvpn has five main purposes:

# To create the largest end-node VPN in the world.
# To promote and test VPN technologies in a large scale infrastructure.
# To create a security-based environment with participation exempted from those conducting unwanted or illegal activity.
# To create a VPN community helping a wide range of individuals, from those who are interested in learning more about VPN technologies to those interested in using the technologies directly, even managing large-scale VPN networks.
# To provide a members-only network of services and resources.
