Gosline, 1947"Pogonopoma" is a
genus ofSouth America ncatfish (order Siluriformes) of the familyLoricariidae . It includes threespecies , "P. obscurum", "P. parahybae", and "P. wertheimeri".cite journal|url=http://silurus.acnatsci.org/ACSI/library/biblios/2007_Ferraris_Catfish_Checklist.pdf|title=Checklist of catfishes, recent and fossil (Osteichthyes: Siluriformes), and catalogue of siluriform primary types|first=Carl J., Jr.|last=Ferraris|journal=Zootaxa |volume=1418|pages=1–628|year=2007|format=PDF ]Taxonomy
"Pogonopoma" is one of three genera currently valid in the tribe
Rhinelepini . "Pogonopomoides", previously a valid genus, was placed in synonymy with "Pogonopoma".cite journal|url=http://www.bioone.org/archive/0045-8511/2002/2/pdf/i0045-8511-2002-2-402.pdf|title="Pogonopoma obscurum": A New Species of Loricariid Catfish (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from Southern Brazil, with Comments on the Genus "Pogonopoma"|first=Rodrigo|last=Quevedo|coauthors=Reis, Roberto E.|journal=Copeia |year=2002|issue=2|pages=402–410|format=PDF |doi=10.1643/0045-8511(2002)002 [0402:POANSO] 2.0.CO;2|volume=2002|doilabel=10.1643/0045-8511(2002)002[0402:POANSO]2.0.CO;2] This genus and "Rhinelepis " have a sister group relationship."Pogonopoma" contains three
species : "P. wertheimeri" (type species ), "P. parahybae" (previously "Pogonopomoides"), and "P. obscurum" (described in 2002).Distribution and habitat
"P. wertheimeri" originates from the
Mucuri River ,São Mateus River , andDoce River . This species is usually found in stretches of river with mid to strong water current and bottom formed by rocks or sand. However, they are also found in the Juparanã lagoon, close to the mouth of the Doce river, which is alentic habitat."P. parahybae" is endemic to the
Paraíba do Sul river basin, where it occurs in areas of mid to strong water current usually associated with rocky substrate."P obscurum" is endemic to the upper reaches of the
Uruguay River , in the states ofRio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, southernBrazil . This species is fairly common and inhabits stretches of the main river and its tributaries, with relatively rapid water currents over bottoms usually formed by rocks and boulders.Appearance and anatomy
As loricariids, "Pogonopoma" species all exhibit a
suckermouth and an at least slightly flattened ventral surface. However, unlike many loricariids, they have circular pupils, which differs from most members of the family that have anomega iris . "Pogonopoma" species are heavily armored except on their abdomen (the belly in the case of loricariids), which is relatively unplated."P. wertheimeri" reaches a length of about 22
centimetre s (8.7 in) SL.FishBase species|genus=Pogonopoma|species=wertheimeri|year=2007|month=May] It is a cylindrically shaped loricariid. The cheek is covered in long, thin, non-evertibleodontode s that form a dense patch.cite journal|title=Phylogenetic Relationships of the Suckermouth Armored Catfishes of the Rhinelepis Group (Loricariidae: Hypostominae)|first=Jonathan W.|last=Armbruster|journal=Copeia |year=1998|issue=3|pages=620–636|doi=10.2307/1447792|volume=1998]"P. parahybae" reaches a length of about 26 cm (10 in) SL.FishBase species|genus=Pogonopoma|species=parahybae|year=2007|month=May] This fish appears to be more of an intermediate between "P. wertheimeri" and "
Rhinelepis ". It is fairly flattened, and also has longer pectoral andpelvic fin s compared to other species of the tribe Rhinelepini. The gill openings are not as large as those in "Rhinelepis". Also, this species lacks long cheek odontodes and the adipose fin."P. obscurum" reaches a length of about 25 cm SL (10 in) SL.FishBase species|genus=Pogonopoma|species=obscurum|year=2007|month=May] Unlike "P. wertheimeri", it simultaneously lacks an adipose fin and cheek odontodes. It's
dorsal fin base is also longer than of other members of this genus.External links
