Catherine Verfaillie (born
1957 ) is a Belgian molecular biologist and professor at theKatholieke Universiteit Leuven (Leuven ,Belgium ).Education
Born in
Ypres , she obtained an M.D.from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in1982 , after which she specialized in internal medicine and became interested inhematology andleukemia .Career
In
1987 she departed for the U.S. as a research-fellow to the University of Minnesota. She worked in the lab of Dr. Phillip McGlave in hematopoiesis and stromal control of hematopoietic stem cells, in 1991 becoming a professor in the Department of Medicine, becoming a full professor in 1997. She holds the Anderson Chair in Stem Cell Biology and the McKnight's Presidential Chair in Stem Cell Biology.
She now leads the "Stamcel Instituut te Leuven" (SCIL) (E: Stem Cell Institute Leuven) at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Leuven, Belgium. She is a member of the Advisory Board of the
