Ralph Waller

Ralph Waller

The Reverend Dr. Ralph Waller is Principal of Harris Manchester College, Oxford and Director of the Farmington Institute for Christian Studies.

Ralph Waller was born in Lincolnshire and educated at the University of London (BD) and the University of Nottingham (MTh) and completed a PhD at the University of London with a thesis entitled "James Martineau: his emergence as a theologian, his christology and his doctrine of the Church, with some unpublished papers" (1987). He is a Master of Arts of the University of Oxford.

He is an ordained minister in the Methodist Church of Great Britain.

He holds honorary doctorates from Menlo College (DLitt), Uppsala University (DTheol, Ball State University (DHum), Hartwick College (DD 2003), and St Olaf College (DHum).

A former Visitor of Harris Manchester, Sir Tony Wrigley, recommended that an independent adjudicator ought to investigate allegations against Dr Waller concerning "unauthorised payments", although the Governing Body rejected the suggestion. It was later alleged that Dr Waller put pressure on a Harris Manchester graduate to withdraw her support from an open letter addressed to the current Visitor, Sir Eric Anderson, concerning the college's financial endowment. (See Patrick Foster, 'Manchester Dis-united', "Oxford Student" [30 October 2003] ).
