Thom PanuzioThe Del-Lords are an Americanrock'n'roll band formed inNew York City in1984 , founded byThe Dictators ' guitaristScott Kempner .The Del Lords combined elements of '60s garage rock with country, blues, and folk influences to become one of the initial progenitors of urban-roots-rock. Band members were: Scott Kempner,
Manny Caiati ,Eric Ambel ,Frank Funaro .The Del-Lords, praised by critics as one of the best rock bands of the 1980s, was derailed by label mismanagement and a Catch-22 situation at radio. Modeled on British bands of the ‘60s that used several singers –
Kinks ,Beatles ,the Who - Kempner’s vision was to create an act featuring four singers, that some said was like an "East CoastBeach Boys ".( [http://weblogs.variety.com/thesetlist/2008/07/scott-kempner-r.html] )The four Del-Lords studio albums – "Frontier Days," "Johnny Comes Marching Home," "Based on a True Story" and "Lovers Who Wander" – are slated to be released on CD in 2008 by the American Beat label.
Kempner told Variety in 2008 that “The Del-Lords was a comfort zone,” noting that bassist Manny Caiati had an aptitude for business, Eric Ambel was in charge of the gear and he was able to spend time writing songs. “It was a well-oiled machine. But having four distinct personalities (as singers) was a hard thing to sell. I had faith in it – I saw it as essential.” ( [http://weblogs.variety.com/thesetlist/scott_kempner/index.html] )
Scott Kempner released his well-received 2nd solo album "Saving Grace" in July 2008. He is in the process of assembling a band for some summer dates. There is talk of a Del-Lords reunion, with Eric Ambel contacted to join Kempner on tour. ( [http://weblogs.variety.com/thesetlist/scott_kempner/index.html] )
