Since taking office, Schmidt has worked to promote localized economic development through an initiative called "BidND". BidND places custodial funds from the treasurer's office such as the Veterans Postwar Trust Fund, Wheat Commission and the Soybean Council in the form of certificates of deposit in local communities through a bid process. BidND has placed millions of dollars in over 60 North Dakota communities. With strong investment oversight, Schmidt's office has contributed $36.5 million in interest income to the state's general fund in the 2005-07 biennium, $30 million more than the prior biennium.
Schmidt is President of the Midwest State Treasurers of the National Association of State Treasurers (NAST) and Midwest Region Vice President on the NAST Executive Committee. She currently serves as Chair of the NAST Foundation which oversees the educational activities of the foundation including the National Institute for Public Finance, the New Treasurers Symposium and initiatives to promote financial literacy.
In her position as State Treasurer, Schmidt serves as a member of the North Dakota State Investment Board, The Teachers Fund for Retirement Board, the North Dakota Board of Tax Equalization, North Dakota State Historical Society, and the North Dakota Board of University and School Lands.Kelly and her husband, Chuck, reside in Mandan, North Dakota they have 4 sons.
