Jaycar is an Australian and New Zealand electronics retailer dealing in electronic components and related products for the electronics enthusiast. It was founded in 1981 when a former Dick Smith Electronics employee, Gary Johnston, bought John Carr Pty Ltd.

Jaycar has 47 stores and more than 100 authorised stockists and agents throughout Australia and New Zealand [cite web | title = Jaycar Electronics Stores | publisher = Jaycar Electronics | url = http://www.jaycar.com.au/stores.asp | accessdate = 2008-09-25 ] that carry products from Jaycar's Electus Distribution wholesale division.

Catalogue

A major portion of the Jaycar catalogue is devoted to what they term "hardcore electronics",fact|date=September 2008 differentiating them from rivals such as Dick Smith Electronics. Jaycar's catalogue is bundled with "Silicon Chip" magazine annually, and is also available for separate purchase. The catalogue originally contained a data section, but the information has since been relocated to the company's website, available for free download.

Controversy

In 2005, Jaycar received negative attention from its imported Taiwanese "Choke-A-Chicken" toy that squawked and slaped its wings when strangled around its neck.
