June 2 ,1956 inZandvoort ), is aracing driver and team principal from theNetherlands . He participated in 41Formula One Grand Prix races, debuting onJanuary 21 ,1979 . He won the24 Hours of Le Mans in 1988 and later participated the race with his own teamRacing for Holland . Also, Jan Lammers is the seatholder of the Dutch A1 Grand Prix team.After winning the 1978 European
Formula 3 Championship, Lammers began his F1 career with Shadow the following year. In 1980 and 1981, Lammers spent two seasons in the Formula One as an ATS driver, as well as driving for Ensign. For 1982, he moved to Theodore but his season was something of a disaster. He scored no championship points during his F1 career, and tried IndyCar racing before turning tosports car racing .In 1988, Lammers, together with Andy Wallace and
Johnny Dumfries , wrote history at Le Mans. In a Jaguar he drove 13 out of the 24 hours, and beat thePorsche team who had remained unbeaten since 1982. Lammers and the team managed to finish first despite a broken gearbox. It was the first victory for Jaguar since 1957.For this feat, Jan Lammers received the title Honorary Member of the BRDC, a title rarely awarded to non-British residents.
Enzo Ferrari andJuan Manuel Fangio have also received the award.In 1990 Lammers won the
24 Hours of Daytona driving aJaguar XJR-12 along with Davy Jones and Andy Wallace.In 1992, Lammers made a two-race comeback in F1 for March, his first F1 appearance since 1982, which is the longest gap between two Grands Prix in the history of Formula One. He was signed for the team in 1993 as well, but they went bankrupt before the season started.
He also raced in the
British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) forVolvo in 1994, in their unusual 850 Estate car.In 1999 Jan Lammers started his own Sportcar team,
Racing for Holland . He raced in theFIA Sportscar Championship together with his teammate and pupil Val Hillebrand. In 2002 and 2003 he earned theFIA Awards for his world championships in the Sportscar series.Since 2005 Jan Lammers is also team owner of the Dutch A1 Grandprix team for the
A1 Grand Prix series, withJos Verstappen during the first season andJeroen Bleekemolen andRenger van der Zande the second season as drivers.Lammers participated in al three
