Chad Johnston

Chad Johnston

Chad Johnston (born March 19, 1974 in Peterstown, West Virginia) was an American football quarterback who played college football for the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Collegiate career

Chad Johnston arrived at West Virginia in 1993. That season, one of the most memorable in Mountaineer history, Johnston played backup to Jake Kelchner and Darren Studstill. While the Mountaineers went 11-0 in the regular season, Chad Johnston saw limited time behind the two stars. Johnston only threw 15 passes, 10 of those completed, for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Johnston was the starting quarterback for the 1994 season, his sophomore year. Johnston ended up throwing for 1,863 yards and 16 touchdowns as the Mountaineers went 7-6. In 1995, Johnston reached a single-season milestone. For the first time, and only time, Johnston threw for over 2,000 yards in a season. Johnston's totals were 2,019 yards and 13 touchdowns on the season.

As a senior in 1996, Johnston's season totals declined slightly. From 2,019 passing yards, Johnston finished the '96 season with 1,958 yards passing. He also had 12 touchdowns on the season.

Even though he didn't possess the ability to run and throw, like former great Major Harris and current starter Patrick White, Johnston is high on many career passing lists in West Virginia record books. Johnston has the second most career passing yards in school history, behind Marc Bulger, with 5,954 yards. Johnston also has the fourth most career touchdown passes, fourth most career pass completions, and third most career pass attempts in school history.
