(1962)"Improvisations" is a 1962 album released by
Ravi Shankar . The opening piece is based on music from Shankar's score forSatyajit Ray 's 1955 film classic, "Pather Panchali " ("Song of the Little Road"). The composition "Fire Night," inspired by the L.A. fires of 1961, features western jazz musicians bassistGary Peacock and flautistBud Shank and is an early example of fusion experiments withjazz andIndian classical music . The concluding ragas are pure examples of traditional Indian style, the first Carnatic (southern India) in origin, the second Hindustani (northern India).Track listing
