Club
O’Connor played his club
hurling with his local Roscrea club. He enjoyed much senior success with the club, beginning in1968 when he won a county championship medal. He won a second county title in1969 , before adding a Munster club title to his collection. O’Connor won a third consecutive county championship medal in1970 . This was later converted into a second consecutive Munster club medal, and a first All-Ireland club medal. He won three further county titles in1972 ,1973 and1980 .Inter-county
O’Connor first came to prominence in the mid-1960s when he was a key member of the Tipperary under-21 hurling team. In
1967 he won both a Munster and an All-Ireland medal at under-21 level, before later joining the Tipp senior team. O’Connor was appointed captain of the Tipperary senior hurling team in1971 . That year he won his first senior Munster title as well as his first senior All-Ireland medal following a great win over Kilkenny. His performance in the championship earned him his first All-Star award. Tipperary hurling went into decline following this victory. In spite of this O’Connor won a second All-Star in1973 and aNational Hurling League medal in1979 . This league victory was followed by a third All-Star award.Teams
